"Woodgate" is one of the old areas of Leicester. It is bounded by the River Soar and the Roman Road known as Fosse way, which linked Exeter to Lincoln. Woodgate itself is part of the A50 as it leaves Leicester going north.
Woodgate was once a heavily industrial area with dye works, foundries and hosiery manufacture, all making use of the river. In more recent times most of the industry has gone, leaving large areas of derelict buildings. After much public complaint over the last 20 years, Leicester City Council have partnered with developers to come up with plans to redevelop the area with new employment and housing.
