There are so many STEM challenges that can be linked to making predictions, but by far one of my favorites and the best for the beginning of the year is Exploding Rainbows. This experiment is pretty low prep, but does require getting some supplies in advance. My supplies only cost me about $6 thanks to Market Pantry brand and Amazon! This experiment is grade for grades PreK to 5.
Without giving too much away, I explode each color of the rainbow as a whole group demonstration, imploring students about what color will come next. After we've exploded the spectrum of the rainbow, I call students up 5 or 6 at a time to explode their own.
Each student will get their own cup to explode. Their job is to predict which color of the rainbow their cup contains! After filling out their prediction on the recording sheet, they explode their cup and record the actual color! The TpT product has 3 different recording sheets for making predictions of varying levels of difficulty and one recording sheet for sequencing in case you'd rather use that comprehension strategy!
