IBM valve modules, marketed as the Electronic Finger, were first introduced in the IBM 604 Electronic Calculating Punch released in 1948. The machine contained 1,250 of these valve units and while these were replaced by transistorised modules in the model 608 in 1958, the 604 remained in use until 1974. Punched cards were used for input, output and intermediate storage.Â
The 604 power consumption was ~7.6 kVA and produced ~5,500 W of heat. Over 5,000 of these machines were manufactured.
