We have been very fortunate to have travelled to many countries overseas and places throughout Australia. These are a few of our stories of interest.
Glass House Mountains looking South from Mary Caircross Park, Maleny Qld, were formed by volcanic activity 27 - 25 MYA and named by Lt James Cook on the 17 May 1770 from HMS Endeavour. He wrote in his journal that "These hills lay but a little way inland and not far from each other, they are very remarkable on account of there singular form of elivation, which very much resemble glass houses which occasioned my giving them that name."
It is commonly believed that these hills reminded him of the glass manufacturing cone furnaces common in his home of Yorkshire - but this may not be correct! Consider some alternative explanations that might make you change your mind!
