(The After School Club for Potterheads!)
Early in 2017, it was strongly suggested that every teacher provide an after school club for our school children. Needless to say, I wasn't exactly enthusiastic towards this push but I figured that if I was going to have to sponsor one then it may as well be something that I would enjoy. Hence, WizMug (aka Wizards & Muggles Club) was born.
Working with two other teachers (and Potterheads!), we came up with a plan to meet once a month in the first half of the year and twice a month in the second half. The first half of the year to be spent doing crafts and activities and the second half playing Quidditch.
I would highly recommend setting a limit to how many students may join. We severely underestimated the interest in our club and have a total of 28 students, which is a high number considering how small a school we have. [We have since split the club into Year 1s and Year 2s with only 16 students in each club. Only previous Year 1s may be in Year 2. The flyers for joining the clubs clearly stated that only the first 16 permission slips received with payments would be accepted into the clubs. We reached maximum capacity for both clubs within 3 school days.]
How you present the club is just as important as what you do. We really get into character and have fun. I wear my Hogwarts robe and carry my wand to each meeting and encourage the club members to do the same. All communication is also sent in character (usually as an attachment in an email). Our enthusiasm has encouraged even those that are minimally acquainted with Harry Potter to read the books and watch the movies.
