Our first Deathday party was a huge success! Again, presentation is everything. It was difficult keeping everything a surprise for the party since WizMug is held in my classroom and the party started right after dismissal. Also, I didn't have any planning periods after recess, so a lot of the decorating had to be completed in advance.
Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday Party appears in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, so I felt that a Chamber of Secrets-inspired rhyme was appropriate.
This picture was taken at the end of the party. Initially, Nagini was "protecting" all of the drinks.
I had some Year 2s help make the decoy cups from plastic wine cups and sticky gems found at Michaels. The Horcrux Cup is a cup I found at Michaels that is supposed to be used to hold a votive candle but I lit it with fairy lights. The Horcrux Cup stickers were then stored in one of the cups.
I hung floating candles (lit with battery-operated votives) and paper lantern pumpkins from the ceiling, used super-cheap plastic tablecloths anywhere that food may end up (for easy cleanup), hung dementors in front of my white board, and hung Aragog in the corner by the food. My room already had house flags, flying keys, and other year-round Hogwarts decor.
I had to set up the treats in advance, so I kept it covered with a black tablecloth until it was time for the party.
We made Deathday Cupcakes (regular cupcakes decorated with candy tombstones and crushed Oreos), Aragog's children (lollipops made to look like spiders), Hufflepuffs (Cheetos), Slytherin snakes (gummy worms), chocolate frogs, and soda. All of the ideas were adapted from ideas we got from Pinterest.
I set up my classroom desks to form two sets of banquet-style seating. I highly suggest covering the desks with disposable black tablecloths to make cleanup super-easy.
I didn't have enough seats for everyone, so whoever didn't have a seat were sent on the Horcrux Hunt first. I rotated club members through the activities. As they came back from the Horcrux Hunt, they took an Expecto Patronus picture with the dementors then played Pin the Head Back on Nearly Headless Nick. When they were done with the activities, they got their snack and those who were finishing their snack were sent on the Horcrux Hunt.
You play it just like Pin the Tail on the Donkey. I gave a prize for this one, the Mystical Unicorn. They were so stoked about getting it!
I set up horcrux stations throughout the school that students found by solving the clues on the map. Everyone who finished got Felix Felicis (edible Liquid Luck I created from mixing together corn syrup, vanilla syrup, and edible gold glitter and stars).
We collected white socks and t-shirts to aid in Hermione's crusade to free house elves! (We then donated them to our church's Migrant Ministry.)
I made this photo-op so club members could practice this spell against a dementor attack.
I even heard from the parents about how much fun their children had at the party. Of course, this puts a lot of pressure about the next one, the Yule Ball!
