Environmental Problem Solving
The West Michigan Environmental Action Council has asked this section of ENS 401 to assist them with a new urban agriculture program. This new urban agriculture effort is being developed in 17 areas across the United States by the USDA. Two of the 17 targeted areas are in the state of Michigan. The purpose of this new urban ag effort is to create more opportunities for commercial urban agriculture, and grow more food where people live. New City Neighbors was also approached to aid in this effort. They are a partner to this effort, and leaders in urban agriculture.
Groups of students from this class will access the new program's marketing, community engagement, recruiting for participants and council, and research existing USDA food programs. They will research existing food system policies as well. The students will use Design Thinking methods to determine next actions for this new urban ag program. Each group's work will be combined and presented as a consultation for our client, WMEAC. We thank WMEAC for trusting us with this new program.
