This is the fourth Cue used in my score for Eloise Richmond's original play 'Mrs Alexander'. The music underpins a narrator whose dialogue gradually turns darker, turning from the happiness of newfound love to the plotting of murder. This track, like much of the show, is reflective of this tonal change.
I use Pitch bend on an electronic keyboard sound, doubled with a standard performance I did on jazz piano to create this haunting, interweaving effect. I also used a lot of automation to make these special moments stand out.
This moment, at the ambiguous and disturbing end of 'Mrs. Alexander', takes the optimistic track 'Isn't It Romantic' and makes a dark turn, with dissonant and violent layers and notes being added to the mix as the track goes on, until the original track is inaudible. The result adds a new layer of hidden evil, malicious intent, and a turn for the worst to an originally happy and romantic tune.
