Does my swimmer have to practice every day? We realize that it’s summer, and families have vacations, camps, and other activities. That being said, daily attendance at practice (M-F) is an essential part of not only improving in swimming, but also feeling part of the team. Please make every effort to bring your child to practice every day if possible.
What is the parent volunteer requirement? Swim meets are 100% run by parent volunteers. Meets require many volunteers to run. Therefore, each family is required to complete two meet or social volunteer jobs during the season. City Meet participants are expected to volunteer for a single shift during city meet. Please see the section above for a complete list of jobs. Jobs vary in time, scope, and interest, so parents can select the jobs that fit their families’ needs and interests.
What happens if I don’t do the volunteer requirements? The Wildwood Gators kindly ask that if you will not be able to fulfill the volunteer requirements, you consider whether your children should be on the swim team. Ultimately, the swimmers will bear the consequences of parents’ dismissal of duties. Without timers, people to label ribbons, starters, setup, take down, stroke and turn judges, etc, the meets cannot run. Many working parents have hired babysitters to bring their children to the meets and work the shift; or parents with young children rally together and take shifts or get a sitter at someone’s house. Better yet, you can select volunteer shifts that are not during swim meets, and help with preparing meets, organizing socials, or setting up the meet/taking down of the meet in the evening. And if your family has any extenuating circumstances that would prevent your family from volunteering and you are concerned, please reach out to a coach or a parent rep.
What gear does my swimmer need? Your swimmer will need a practice suit (girls: racing suit, boys: jammer), a pair of goggles, and a towel. A swim cap will be provided with registration. The team suit can be purchased through Kiefer Aquatics (https://theswimteamstore.net/brentwood-swim-tennis-club-at-wildwood.html). If you choose not to purchase the team suit, please try to find a navy suit to use for meets (swimoutlet.com usually has quality inexpensive suits or Amazon is fine too).
What is Fun Friday? To keep things fun, each Fun Friday has it's own dress up theme and the swimmers receive treats after practices each Friday.
What is Clerk of Course? Clerk of Course is a designated area on the pool deck where swimmers will get organized and ready to race. The Clerk of Course volunteers will place the children in the correct heat and lane, and then lead them to the starting blocks. Please have your children remain in their designated age group areas during the meets, so they will be ready to report to Clerk of Course when it’s their turn. Volunteers cannot search the pool deck and playground for swimmers, and we hate for anyone to miss their race!
How can I be involved? Volunteer! Each family has a minimum volunteer requirement, but we encourage you to be as involved as possible! We can always use help on meet days and during social events.
What are night practices? Night practice is for ages 7+ on Mondays and Thursdays from 5:00-5:45. Night practice is for an alternative when swimmers have school, VBS or camps during morning practices. Night practices are not designed as a permanent replacement for morning practices due to varying levels that are present at night practice. Swimmers are allowed to attend 5 night practices a season.
