Businesses show their eco-friendly approach at various levels such as creating paperless offices, avoiding the use of plastic, encouraging their staff to use public transportation or to join a car pool, etc. All these efforts are to be appreciated so why not in our workplace (Your_COMPANY_Name)?
We created an email template you can send to your office manager/any person responsible for your company office supplies and environment. Be the lead and take the initiative :)
Objectives
- Build an active green community embracing eco-friendly values in terms of innovation, respect and "Cloud based system" (to be reformulated depending on your company)
- Zero plastic policy starting Sept 2019
- Reduce financial costs while being greener and greener
"Our NYC/Paris/Tokyo office will be the pilot and a role model for other locations worldwide, we, as a company will create monthly green challenges (no plastic cups, no plastic straw to achieve a goal of 0 plastic waste among others by January 2020) to embrace our environmental values.
The objective is to work together towards a unified environment goal, and be proud of our company positive impact.
A non exhaustive list to prioritize depending on how advanced your company is :
- Create monthly green challenges (no plastic cups, no plastic straw, no plastic bottles step by step). Our company will commit to order anything using plastic (kitchen, supplies orders etc).
- Monthly Fun facts and articles - Highlighting great achievement and what we already do "Buy FAIR TRADE & ORGANIC" for instance (acknowledge we already do a few things, we could go further). Monthly green representative/1 representative (captain representing the value of the month)
- Reduce/Clean your mail box (a few tips below*)
- Respect clear recycling rules (Reminder if not respected :( NYC city department might fine companies for not respecting recycling rules)
- Plastic collector (mainly for plastic bags too often employee will grab a plastic bag for lunch for a single use, the idea is to collect them and re-use them (Phase 1 then Ban them)).
- Encourage Green Commute - Carpool slack group, Reward gift card for biking to the office (ideal during the summer)
- Conserve your computer energy (sleep mode when you are away for short periods of time and turn off your computer whenever you're not using it).
- Eliminate paper towel and user hand dryers instead
- Employee will bring their reusable water bottle/mug (Company gift)
- Our company will invest in stain forks and knives. We will no longer user plastic cutlery
- Go Green literally green with plants! They absorb airborne pollutants (which are rampant with off-gassing office furniture), and emit healthy negative ions and oxygen into the air. Having some green plants in the office also reduces that "sterile" look, making it more comfortable for everybody. Kyriba gift.
- Purchase green products such as staple-less staplers and pens that can be refilled repeatedly rather than sent to a landfill.
- Building Negotiation for Air conditioning/heat management - "If you have access to your office thermostat, heat your office to a maximum of 21°C when occupied, 16°C when unoccupied. Heating and cooling set points must be set 2 to 3°C apart so that the air conditioner does not cycle (turn on and off) frequently (BC Hydro). "
- Compost (Find different volunteers to collect the compost store in the freezer/specific box in a NYC compost drop off location)
- Lunch and share meeting to go further and engaged employees
