Register for our 2022 Conference!
The Athena Network was created in the fall of 2019 by Dr. Kevin Brushett and Dr. Marie-Michèle Doucet, both professors at the History department at RMC. The idea took form after they attended a conference in Ottawa with some of their students on the topic of women and security. All of the women present – diplomats, military officers and politicians – emphasized how networking and mentorship were critical to their careers.
When they launched the Athena Network, they wanted to offer cadets similar opportunities to build their futures by meeting and exchanging ideas with current and former member of the CAF and of RMC. Without being closed to anyone that wishes to take part in the Network our primary focus as always been (and remains) to encourage women’s initiatives and discussion on gender roles at the College.
Athena started with just a handful for passionate cadets and faculty members and has since then involved in a community that shine through its inclusivity and positivity. In 2020 they launched their very own mentor-mentee program pairing current or former CAF members with Officer-cadets or recent RMC graduates. They are happy to count LtGen (ret’) Christine Whitecross as their senior-mentor. They also have a team of 21 cadets who have seized the opportunity to help the Network grow. Through their initiatives Athena now has a book club, hosts webinars and interview as part of their Operation Q&A and has its very own annual Speed Networking Event which takes place on Women’s International Day every year.
