Cheer Competition

By: Alyssa Hirschfeld

The Wheeler Cheerleaders are heading to the ECC Competition this Saturday, in Waterford CT. They have to go up against Three different teams, not placing against these teams in a couple years, but according to them the team has stepped it up in their routine.

Wheeler Cheerleading has not placed in ECC Competition since 2017, we no longer have a middle school team which is causing less and less people to come to Varsity cheerleading. This year we only got one new athlete joining the team, which has caused our team to be a lot smaller than the last two years.

Senior Adele Cherenzia was asked how she was feeling about comp this year, “Good and confident in the routine this year and I think we will do pretty good”.  When Captain Rose Tardiff was asked how she was feeling she shared, “Excited for competition and ready to do the routine”. Junior Hannah Wright on the team, responded with “Yes I feel like we have a good chance this year”. Seeing if the girls had confidence in the routine this year, since last year there was not as much confidence, or assurance. If everyone felt the same about the routine and how they felt about it, it was important because it showed everyone's different feelings and if they were the same.

Interviewees were next asked: If they are confident in our routine our senior Adele Cherenzia responded with, “Yes, but the stunts get a little scary.” Then our Captain Rose Tardiff agreed saying, “Yes and no, I'm confident in the routine but some parts are difficult”. Finally, I asked our Junior cheerleader Hannah Wright, she stated, “I am more confident in our routine this year then the past two years on varsity cheer”.

If anyone was curious to know if the cheerleaders as a team had any worries or if they were stressed about any parts of the routine, most of the girls have one part that worries them. First Adele Cherenzia, our senior, stated, “I was scared because of last year, but I hope we do good.” Then our captain Rose Tardiff agreed with, “I am not nervous but, I hope it does not go like last year”. Lastly, Hannah Wright answered this question, she has a lot of feelings about this routine this year, stating she was, “Anxious, excited, and sad”. Realizing that everyone is nervous for the routine this year, but they have a lot more confidence in the routine than they did last year, and in the past.

People that are not competing, but watching the routine live, or in person answered some questions on how they think the Wheeler Cheerleaders are going to do. First question was, if they were watching the routine and Niamh Korten and Valentina Corrigan responded “yes”. Then, they were asked their opinions on how confident the wheeler cheerleaders should be in their routine and how they think we are going to do this year. Niamh Korten responded with, “I think they will do amazing this year”. While Valentina Corrigan agreed saying, “I think they will do good and may place this year”. Lastly, they were both asked if they have seen our routine since we competed about two weeks ago, they both saw some of the routine as they stated.

The ECC Cheerleading Competition is this Saturday the 17 at Waterford High School, Doors open at 3:00. Tickets are available online come support your Wheeler cheerleaders!
