The Nail that Won’t Quit
Rusty nail, oxidized steel weathered down,
Floorboards have done their worldly tour, now lay lown.
Tarnished screw beelining to the sky,
Pin-prick straight like the pupil of a hawk's eye.
Flat-footed man comes stomping around,
Now finds his foot pinned fast, earthbound.
Curses flow out of his mouth as he steps off,
Yet the idea of removing it would bring a scoff.
This daily ritual never seems to end,
His path never wavering, never meeting a bend.
Pain is persistent, as all good things are,
What was once a bruise now becomes a scar.
He'll complain of the pain, a bitter hypocrite,
But all that is left is the nail that won’t quit.
