How do I sign up to take an online class? Complete the Online Course Contract and submit it to your counselor. Your counselor will contact you soon after to confirm enrollment.
If I take an online course during the summer, is it the same as summer school? No. Summer School is for credit recovery ONLY and meets in person at Western. Online courses are for first-time credit and are completed from home.
What courses can I take? Students can take any offered course if it fits at least one of the 3 criteria below:
The course is not offered at Western.
The course will not fit into the student's proposed schedule.
The student needs the course to get to a desired level of the subject by the time they graduate.
Students requesting to take Math 1, Math 3, Biology, or English II must receive special permission from Mr. Barnett as these are courses with EOC state tests.
When will my online course start/end? The start of online courses varies depending on when the student is registered. Your Counselor and/or online teacher will inform you when your course will begin and end. Click here for Virtual Learning Calendars.
How do I log in? Students can log in through the app in Clever (single sign-on) or from the NCVPS.org or Edmentum.com websites with their username and password. Your counselor emails NCVPS login info to you, and Edmentum comes directly from the EdOptions team and/or your Counselor. It is your responsibility to contact your counselor for your login information if you do not receive it.
What if my login doesn't work? Student logins will not work until the official course start date.
Is there a scheduled time I have to log in? No, all NCVPS and Edmentum courses are asynchronous, meaning that students can log in at any time of day as long as they submit their assignments by the indicated deadlines.
How many hours a day should I expect to work on the class? This varies from class to class, but students should expect to dedicate about 1-3 hours daily to their online courses. Remember, this is a course you would spend an hour in during school and any additional time for homework and projects. Additionally, most online courses are offered in smaller time frames than in-person, requiring more time as the course progresses more rapidly.
Who do I contact if I have questions about my coursework or course deadlines? Students must communicate directly with their assigned NCVPS or Edmentum teacher via email or through the Canvas portal / Edmentum website. This is a recommended first step before contacting their counselor.
Do these courses count the same as courses taken in person at Western? Yes. These courses will reflect on your official transcript and will factor into your GPA.
How does my counselor receive my final grade? Counselors will receive a final report of all student grades at the end of the online course session. These will be added to student transcripts within a few weeks.
