Organizations

  • TESOL - Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. is the foremost organization on TESL/TEFL.
  • MidTESOL - "The mission of Mid-America Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages is to strengthen the effective teaching of English in Iowa and Missouri to people whose native language is a language other than English while respecting their individual language rights."
  • CAL - The Center for Applied Linguistics is an organization dedicated to "working to improve communication through better understanding of language and culture."
  • DESE - The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's main website.
  • SIL International - SIL serves language communities worldwide, building their capacity for sustainable language development, by means of research, translation, training and materials development.
  • LSA - The Linguistics Society of America is an organization dedicated to advancing the scientific study of language. (See their list of Resolutions, Statements and Guides.)
  • Education Advisory Board - The Education Advisory Board provides best practice research and practical advice to leaders of academic affairs, business affairs, student affairs, continuing, online, and professional education, and community colleges across North America.

  • Dave's ESL Cafe - This site includes numerous resources on jobs in ESL and ESL resources for teachers and students.
  • ESL Resource Center - This page includes man recourses on basic English skills that may benefit ESL students.
  • Minimal Pairs for English RP - John Higgins's site with many minimal pair (note that these are based on standard British pronunciation, therefore, not all pairs may work in American teaching settings).
  • The Sounds of Spoken Language - The University of Iowa maintains this often cited web resource. While this page has some great articulatory illustrations (and videos), their selection of sample words can be quite problematic in a classroom setting.
