TESOL TEstimonials

Here are a few testimonials from our first set of MA in TESOL graduates from the initial 2018-2019 cohort.

Having worked as an English teacher for nearly ten years I was looking for an international MA degree where I could update my theoretical and practical skills. When I heard about Webster University program starting in Tashkent, without hesitation I applied.

I found the MA TESOL very beneficial in learning theoretical and practice skills. The course has allowed me to discover various approaches in language acquisition, assessment, materials design and technology use. Another great thing about the program was networking with my coursemates, sharing ideas and learning from each other has been a great experience. Finally, various seminars and events organized by the university allowed me to further grow both professionally and in personal level. I am so grateful to the program and my inspiring teachers who helped me to become a better teacher.

I can say with confidence that MA TESOL was one of the best decisions in my professional life. The program will not only help you grow as a teacher, but will also open doors to life-long learning, discovering new ideas and experience.

The completion of MA TESOL program at Webster University made a crucial turn in my educational as well as teaching life. This program encouraged me not only to feel the maturity in ELT, but also gave me the chance to redefine my limits in teaching, to become a TESOL instructor & even Adjunct Professor at Webster University. I should admit, I gained the knowledge which can be dreamed to get by everybody who has a wish to develop & prosper in ESL teaching.

Thank you, Webster!!!

I always had a dream of studying abroad in a presigious university. Webster University in the heart of Central Asia, Tashkent, gave me a chance of feeling the American breeze without leaving my own country, Uzbekistan. It provided me with an international diploma and a congenial atmosphere of education. I met different people, learned loads of knowledge, became a better professional in my field thanks to this great educational setting.

I studied MA TESOL and became university teacher with the valuable diploma and degree that I gained in this university.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is this degree recognized?

This is a U.S. master's degree, which will be recognized anywhere in the world that accepts an MA in TESOL. Graduates of this program will receive the same transcript and diploma that students in the United States receive. Students who successfully complete and pass all eleven courses will receive a Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language and a TEFL Certificate.

How long will the program take?

This program is designed to be completed in eleven months (just under one year). Classes are scheduled in five eight-week terms (see the schedule above). The practicum experience (see below) will take place over a longer period during the second half of the program. Students will be in two classes per nine-week term and meet two times a week, with each class session lasting four hours. This schedule is designed to work around job schedules and family time.

Will I need to complete a thesis?

The Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education has authorized this special one-year master's program, which does not require a thesis. There is a practicum experience at the end of the program, which will involve observing experienced English teachers, teaching lessons, and being observed. Please see the Practicum Handbook for Uzbekistan (also linked above).

Can I complete part of my program in the United States?

At present, this is not an option. Graduates of master's programs from Webster University may seek to complete an additional degree at one of our other locations. See the list of graduate program offerings.

May I take different courses than the ones listed?

This program has been designed specifically to be completed in one year at a reduced tuition rate. As a result, students will need to take the courses as prescribed for this special program.

What is a practicum?

As part of the MA in TESOL, students will complete a practicum experience. For students that are not currently teaching, they will be set up to observe English classes, assist in teaching short lessons, and receiving feedback on their instruction. Students may be able to use their own classroom if they are already teaching English. Students will submit a portfolio of original lesson plans at the end of the practicum experience and receive feedback from one of their professors.

How much does the program cost?

For the current 2020-2021 cohort of students the cost of the program is $4200 U.S. dollars, which may be paid in two installments (one before classes begin and the second at the beginning of the second semester). Please note that this tuition is only for the MA in TESOL in Uzbekistan and that this amount may go up in future years.

Will I have opportunities to interact with students and faculty from other countries?

As the program continues, we expect to see more students from outside Uzbekistan apply. In our first cohort year we have one American student taking classes along with students in Tashkent. During the first semester, Webster University sent a TESOL faculty member to teach in the program. Webster faculty and staff from the United States will periodically visit. Visits have included Chancellor Beth Stroble, President Julian Schuster, Vice President John Pyle, Associate Dean DJ Kaiser, and many other Webster faculty and staff.

What if I have trouble while completing my degree?

Webster University has many support services to help students succeed. This includes access to our Online Writing Center. More resources are included on the TESOL Program webpage for student resources. You may also reach out to your instructors for assistance. Please recognize that not all assistance is immediate. Please allow Webster staff and faculty a reasonable amount of time to respond and please refrain from calling faculty or staff at home (especially after hours). We are all here to help students succeed.

What if I am not happy with a grade that I received in a class?

Webster University seeks to maintain high academic expectations while helping students succeed. Webster faculty are held to fair grading policy standards, which include program-wide rubrics on course-end key assessments, reducing points or giving failing grades in cases of plagiarism, and assigning lower grades to work that does not meet course or program expectations. If you do not understand why you received a particular grade please contact your instructor first. Please be respectful of faculty members and staff when requesting clarification or expressing disagreement. Webster University has a grade appeal process also should that be needed. The current campus director for our Uzbekistan programs is Dr. Vasilius Polymenis.
