Information and communication technologies (ICT) especially the internet is fast becoming a bigger and bigger part of all parts of our lives. The biggest change you have probably noticed is how much more computers and the internet are now used at school.
Respect and privacy are two of the most important aspects of everyday life, weather you are at home, school or late the workplace. There is a certain expectation of how we will treat others and be treated ourselves. We go though life expecting to be respected, from little things such as thanking someone for holding a door open, all the way to respecting boundaries such as keeping private someone’s sensitive information that we may have been told in confidence, or resolving conflicts and disagreements calmly without resorting shouting and hateful comments.
The internet is a challenging place to navigate and use and we must remember even though emails, messages and forums are a bit impersonal that everyone we communicate with thought the internet behind the text is human too and we should treat them the same as if they were standing next to us.
Sometimes this is hard to remember or we feel the ability to say and do things on the internet that we wouldn’t do in person. This doesn’t have to be being intentionally mean but could be not taking into account time zones when contacting people or sending repeated messages to gain a response, we must make sure that we do not take up others' time unnecessarily.
We must remember that because we cant see the immediate consequences of what we do online, it makes it even more important to focus on how we act.
