Timeline:

Sign-ups end: 8th of February (unless I get too many players, then I will close them early)

Start of game 1: by the 18th of February

Start of game 2: by the 4th of March

Format:

The tournament will be played in three rounds (Qualification, Semi-Finals, and Finals), with each player playing two games per round (except the final which will be one round). All games will be played at webDiplomacy.net with the following settings: the original (Classic) Diplomacy map, hidden draw votes, anonymous players, full press, 36-hour phase length, and a 5 point bet. The second game for each round will start around two weeks after the first game starts so players aren't starting two games at once. If a player receives the same country assignment in both games of a round, the second game's country assignments will be re-shuffled. All games will be force drawn at the end of 1925. Finally, care will be taken to mix players from different sites in games so everyone has a chance to experience new players and play styles.

Player qualification:

If you want to play in this tournament you need to be a reliable player (80% reliability rating on webDiplomacy or something equivalent on another website if you are an online player) and have played a minimum of 10 classic diplomacy games (online, f2f or a combination of both). If you are just starting out then I do not recommend this tournament for you.

Scoring:

Games will be ranked with sum of squares (SoS) scoring.

How SoS will be working in this tournament (taken from http://www.world-diplomacy-database.com/php/scoring/scoring_class.php?id_scoring=36)

1. Scoring of games resulting in a DRAW

(total of scores from a drawn game = 100 points)

At the end of the game each player will score points equal to the square of the centres they hold. (For example, 5 centres = 25 points, 15 centres = 225 points).

All points from a draw game will be standardized and converted (calculated as a percentage of the sum of scores from that game) so that the total of player scores from a drawn game equals 100 points.

2. Scoring of games resulting in an 18 centre WIN (solo)

(total of scores from an 18 centre win = 100 points)

The winning player will score 100 points.

All losing players will score zero.

Metagaming:

Special rule: you are not allowed to tell players what website you are from or your username - if you are caught doing this I will disqualify you. If you think you know someone’s identity, keep it to yourself - do not post on this publicly or talk to anyone about your or another players identity. Do not pretend to be another person either.

Seeding:

The Qualification Round will be seeded by site rankings. It will be open to as many players as I deem possible. Games will be anonymous and you will not know who is in your game. You will not be playing with the same people in both games

The Semi-Finals will be seeded by the results of the Qualification round with ties being broken by initial seeding. They will include the top 21 players (or top 14 players if there are fewer than 42 players in the Qualification round).

The Final round will include the top seven players from the Semi-Finals and will be seeded by the results of the Semi-Final round with ties being broken by score in the Qualification round and then by initial seeding.

Ties:

In the event of a tie of total points the following will declare the winner:

    1. By the highest # of solos
    2. By the quickest solo
    3. By the highest score in any common games between the participants
    4. By the quickest draws (ie player A finished her games in 1907 and 1905 and player B finished her games in 1908 and 1905 then player A gets through - If the added numbers are tied then it moves onto #5)
    5. By random draw

Etiquette:

Each player will be allowed one pause per game lasting up to one week without question. Any further pauses must be agreed upon by everyone in the game and it is recommended that account sitters be found if such a situation arises. Games will be on Wait-For-Orders mode to prevent NMRs. Any player who triggers Wait-For-Orders twice will be removed from the tournament.

Conflicts:

In the event of any issue not described above the TD will make a fair and impartial judgement as she is fair and impartial to her very core. As with any tournament, TD decisions can be appealed to the moderator team. Please note that all normal tournament rules apply and can be found at http://www.webdiplomacy.net/rules.php#Tournaments

Prize:

The prize is recognition and awe across the online diplomacy community. And if you come to a f2f tournament I am present at I will buy you a drink. And the webdip mods will give you a trophy on your profile and 1,000 points for first place, 750 points for 2nd place, and 500 points for 3rd place.

Opening Round:
