The webDiplomacy league runs in two seasons per year, once in Autumn and Winter, once in Spring and Summer. August is a rest month.

There are currently six leagues in total, though there may be up to twelve. The Premier league, league A1, league A2, league B1, league B2, league B3 league C1, league C2, league C3, league D1, league D2, and league D3. Six are demoted from the Premier league, and three from each of leagues A1 and A2 are promoted. Three are demoted from each of leagues league A1 and A2 into leagues B1, B2, and B3. The two best players from each of B1, B2, and B3 are promoted. The two worst players from each of B1, B2, and B3 are demoted into C1, C2, and C3. The 2 best players from each C league will be promoted to the B leagues and 3 worst players will be relegated to D1, D2, and D3 leagues. The 3 best players from each of leagues D1, D2, and D3 will be promoted to the C leagues.

When promoting and relegating at the end of the season, it is necessary to consider the number of players who are positioned higher but are withdrawing before next season, either because they can't play or because they were playing in two leagues following a mid-season withdrawal. If there is no withdrawal, the numbers promoted and relegated are as stated above. The first withdrawal reduces the number relegated by one. The second increases the number promoted by one. The third reduces the number relegated by a further one, meaning that overall two fewer are relegated and one more is promoted. The fourth increases the number promoted, the fifth the number demoted and so on and so forth. If the number to be demoted reaches zero, any further withdrawals will simply increase the number promoted.

If a player has to miss one or two seasons for some reason, he may rejoin the next season at the league level he was entitled to when he had to withdraw, provided he is filling in another withdrawal. If there is no withdrawal at that level, but there is one lower down, he may fill that place in. Should a player miss more than two seasons, he will have to restart from the bottom. When more people are applying to return than there are places to return to, the shall be allocated on the basis of the position they were in before withdrawing, followed by, in the event of a tie, the number of seasons they have not been playing for.

The allocation between different sub-leagues is done by seeding before each season by last season's performance. New players are always seeded on a first come, first serve basis. For example, between B1, B2, and B3, filling will occur 1 man per sub-league at a time. This means that the top demoted player from A1 and A2 will grab the first B1 spot. The second best demoted player will grab the first B2 spot and the third, the first B3 spot. The next top player (who should also be a demotion if there are no withdrawals) would take the second B3 spot and the next the second B2 spot and then the second the B1 spot. At this point, the pairings would be: 1st place with 6th place, 2nd place with 5th place, and 3rd place with 4th place. The rest of the filling would repeat this process until each of the sub-leagues have 7 players. Once all old players are placed, new players are seeded on a first come, first serve basis. So new player A who signed up an hour before new player B would be placed before player B in the order described above.

Scoring in the leagues is as follows: 12 for a win, 12 divided by n for an n-way draw, and tie breaks by, in order, SC count, games won, 2-ways, 3-ways, 4-ways etc.
