Your mentorship makes all the difference!
This page outlines your key responsibilities and provides quick access to all required forms, training, and resources to support your Intern I.
Internship I marks the first phase of WCU’s full-year teacher internship experience. Candidates begin this placement during the first week of WCU classes each semester. Before the school’s semester begins, interns should confirm their start date with both their Clinical Educator (CE) and Field Supervisor to ensure a smooth transition into the classroom.
The time commitment varies by program, but most Intern I candidates spend approximately two full days (about 15 hours) per week in their host classrooms.
During this experience, interns:
Observe their Clinical Educator’s teaching practices
Participate in daily classroom activities
Plan and teach lessons as required by their program
Intern I candidates generally follow the WCU academic calendar, except for their initial start date. They continue in their placements through the final week of WCU classes, not including exam week.
Intern Is are expected to teach a certain number of lessons over the course of the internship I experience.
These are outlined in the intern’s Program Specific Requirements.
Regardless of the number…
½ of the lessons should be taught prior to the midterm conference (WCU Fall/Spring Break)
The remaining lessons must be taught prior to the final conference.
Interns are always encouraged, but not required, to teach additional lessons unless required by their program to meet proficiency.
Full lesson plans are required for all lessons taught during Intern I.
Lesson plan formats may be specified by programs.
