Trot races are run on oval-shaped track that is one kilometer (1000 m) long. A maximum of twelve (12) horses may participate in one start. Horses numbered 1–8 start from the front row, and horses 9–12 from the second row.
A Ponies: Shetland Ponies and British Spotted Ponies under 107 cm. For ages 3 to 18.
B Ponies: Shetland ponies over 107 cm, as well as other purebred ponies officially approved for trot racing. B ponies must be between 107.1 cm and 130.0 cm in height. For ages 3 to 18.
Note: Crossbred ponies and Welsh Part-Breds (WPB) are not recognized as eligible trot racing breeds.
Finnhorses: Finnhorses. For ages 3 to 15.
Cold-bloods: North Swedish Horse and Dole Horse (Dølehest). For ages 3 to 15.
Standardbreds: American Trotter, French Trotter, Orlov Trotter, and their crossbreds (Warmblood Trotters). For ages 3 to 12.
A Ponies: 1100 m
B Ponies: 1600 m
Finnhorses: 2100 m
Cold-bloods: 2100 m
Standardbreds: 2600 m
