Often referred to as the “king of sports” of equestrian sport, eventing is a three-phase competition that demands trust, speed, and endurance from both horse and rider. All phases are completed with the same horse.
Dressage Test
Judged similarly to traditional dressage. Scores are converted into penalty points. The rider with the fewest penalties leads going into the next phase.
Cross-Country Test
The most demanding phase, testing speed, bravery, and stamina. Horses jump solid obstacles such as logs, ditches, banks, and water complexes.
Show Jumping Test
Held in an arena with 10–15 fences.
Horses are regularly checked by a veterinarian throughout the event. Only horses in good health are allowed to continue.
The final score is the sum of penalty points from all three phases. The winner is the horse-and-rider combination with the lowest total.
