About Stroud Water Research Center

Since 1967, Stroud™ Water Research Center has focused on one thing — fresh water. We seek to advance knowledge and stewardship of freshwater systems through global research, education, and watershed restoration. At the Stroud Center, we believe the future of fresh water starts here.

FRESHWATER RESEARCH: Moving Freshwater Science Forward

Our freshwater research efforts in biogeochemistry, ecosystem ecology, entomology, fish ecology, fluvial geomorphology, and microbiology require intellectual curiosity, a systematic and rigorous approach to scientific research, and the drive to answer a series of challenging questions about freshwater ecosystems. The answers to these questions may take decades to fully understand, but it is critical that we persist, as they have the power to influence others in ways that positively affect the world’s finite supply of clean fresh water.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: A Watershed Approach to Education

Our award-winning education department interprets the research of our scientists, delivering freshwater-focused programs that are multidisciplinary and oriented to a wide audience. We hope to foster responsible stewards of freshwater resources through boots-in-the-water stream studies, on-the-water canoeing experiences, and virtual stream-to-screen programs for schools, Scouts, adult educators, citizen scientists, families, and so many others.

Announcing Fall Education Programming Opportunities!

💧 Virtual/online stream and watershed study experiences (live, recorded, or Virtual Learning Resources).

💧 Outdoor-only education programs at the Stroud Center.

💧 Outdoor-only education programs at your site (e.g., school or local park).

💧 Canoe-based stream studies on local waterways.

WATERSHED RESTORATION: A Shared Public and Private Investment

Our Robin L. Vannote Watershed Restoration Program works hand in hand with landowners, helping them use their land more effectively through whole-farm planning and watershed stewardship. In return for our program services, landowners are asked to install forested buffers on streams on their properties and to allow us ongoing access to their sites to gather the scientific data from these efforts. The Watershed Restoration Program enables our expert team to set up the collaborations and partnerships necessary to achieve the highest level of freshwater conservation.
