The red fox makes its home along the edges of the forests, in tilled fields, and in meadows. They prefer ecosystems with a diversity of vegetation types. The red fox is an omnivore, meaning they prey on small mammals, amphibians, insects, and fruit found in their habitat. some animals include "mice, hamsters, ground squirrels, gerbils, woodchucks, deer mice and pocket gophers. They also eat birds, rabbits, porcupines, hares, raccoons, opossums, insects and small reptiles." (Animalia.bio., n.d.)
Foxes are known to be fast and skillful hunters. "They have a characteristic manner of hunting mice. The fox stands motionless, listening and watching intently for a mouse it has detected. It then leaps high and brings the forelimbs straight down forcibly to pin the mouse to the ground." (Red Fox - The Nature Conservancy. Red Fox. n.d.) The scraps or carrion, left behind a foxes meal provides food for small scavengers and decomposers. They also disperse seeds by eating fruit.
