The Sierra Nevada Red Fox has a few key features that can help us recognize them in the wild. For example, red foxes have a long snouts and red fur that runs across their face, back, sides, and tail. Their color and size helps distinguish them between the grey foxes, which are also endangered. The red fox has a grayish-white colored fur around its throat, chin, and stomach. This mammal is about 3 feet long and 2 feet tall, which is also larger than the grey fox. Red foxes have black feet and black-tipped ears that are large and pointy. The Sierra Nevada red fox key characteristic is their beautiful white-tipped fluffy tail.
Red foxes are known for their speed and hunting skills. On their paws, they have pads that allow them to move easily through different terrains and weather conditions. Their toes have sharp claws that never retract; these claws help them "capture prey, fight off predators, dig dens, and get food to bring back to their homes." (foxesworld.com, n.d.) Foxes tend to have long, slender bodies, built for speed, which helps them move quickly in various weather conditions.
Another amazing feature of the red fox includes their astonishing ability to hear. This is with the help of their long, pointed ears. Their listening potential empowers the fox to hear "the movements of rodents and other prey from under the ground, giving them an advantage while hunting, sneaking around, and hiding from potential harm." (foxesworld.com, n.d.)
Foxes are truly talented all around; they are super fast, they have amazing hearing, and their vision is exceptional! Red foxes have a slight sense of color, along with the ability to see in just about any light conditions. Hence, why these little furry friends are extraordinary hunters. "Their field of view is relatively wide but do have a limited binocular vision and focusing power." (foxesworld.com, n.d.)
