The Vulpes vulpes necator is primarily found on the western coast of the United States, in California, in the Sierra Nevada mountains. (#10 on the map) According to USFWS, only about 18 to 39 individuals are left. "Sightings of the Sierra Nevada population have been limited to federal lands in Alpine, Fresno, Inyo, Madera, Mono and Tuolumne counties." (FWS.gov, n.d.)
Vulpes Vulpes Necator is listed as "Least Concerned" on IUCN.
Humans. The human population is the biggest threat against our furry friends. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, "The Sierra Nevada red fox once was found throughout the Sierra Nevada mountains, but populations have declined dramatically because of poisoning and trapping, habitat destruction from logging and livestock grazing, and disturbance from off-road vehicles and snowmobiles." Many people also hunt foxes for their fur.
