Mission Statement

The IASPEI/IAVCEI Joint Commission on Volcano Seismology was Founded at the XXI General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) in Boulder, Colorado, July 2-14, 1995, as a Joint Commission of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI) and the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI).

We envision a future in which volcano seismology and acoustics — across the solid Earth, oceans, and atmosphere — play a transformative role in revealing the structure and dynamics of volcanoes and safeguarding communities worldwide. This commission strives to deepen our understanding of volcanic systems and move toward more reliable, timely, and actionable forecasts of volcanic activity.

Our Volcano Seismo-Acoustic Commission is committed to:

• Building a global, inclusive scientific community that fosters collaboration across disciplines, institutions, and borders to tackle the most pressing challenges in volcanology.

• Empowering the next generation of scientists and observatories, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, through equitable access to knowledge, training, and cutting-edge tools.

• Driving innovation in monitoring and experimentation, championing the integration of emerging technologies — such as distributed sensing and advanced seismo-acoustic instrumentation — into both research and operational practice.

• Inspiring learning and exchange through events in high-impact conferences, focused workshops, and educational initiatives that expand the frontiers of seismo-acoustic imaging and monitoring of volcanic systems.

• Advocating for sustained international investment to enable participation, collaboration, and the free flow of ideas, ensuring that scientific advances translate into global benefit.
