About the Logo

We envision a future in which volcano seismology and acoustics - across the solid Earth, oceans, and atmosphere - play a transformative role in revealing the structure and dynamics of volcanoes, and safeguarding communities worldwide. Our new logo intents to reflect this mission: The (slightly modified) waveform was recorded by a seismic sensor during the eruption of Hunga volcano (Kingdom of Tonga) in 2022. Alongside the seismic energy released directly into the solid Earth, it beautifully captured the pressure waves sent out by the largest explosions (as acoustic energy) from the early phases of the eruption, as well as T-waves (associated with hydro-acoustic energy) generated by submarine mass movements during later stages. In other words, we can see energy that has travelled through the ground, air and water!
