Franca Viola was a teen girl.
She was the first girl ever to say no to the shotgun wedding and became a symbol of the cultural progress and the emancipation of women.
Franca had a boyfriend, his name was Filippo Melodia but he was part of the mafia and he got arrested.
After that Franca's father decided that his daughter had to break up with her boyfriend.
Filippo didn't accept that so he started to threaten Franca’s family. Once Filippo intimated Franca's father but he did not submit. One day Filippo kidnapped Franca and her brother but, after a while, Filippo and his helpers relased her brother because he had nothing to do with that.
They held her kidnapped for a week without eating or drinking. Filippo beat and sexually abused Franca because in the 90's there was a law: if a woman had sexual relations with a man, automatically that woman belonged to that man and if she did not agree to marry him she was ridiculed by people for not being a virgin and being an unmarried woman. To avoid that, the woman could marry her abusator in a marriage called 'shotgun wedding' by the law.
So Filippo asked her father to marry Franca in a shotgun wedding. Franca's father pretented to agree but he had made a plan with the Police. The day after, the Police arrested Filippo and his helpers. After that, the judge asked Franca if she wanted to accept the shotgun wedding but she said no.
As a consequence of her decision people laughed at her but she didn't care and she married her childhood friend Giuseppe Ruisi that she loved. Franca asserted her freedom as a woman by saying
"I am owned by nobody".
