When a student is ready to start dae ryun (free sparring) training, a step by step introduction is necessary. This serves to show not only how to fight effectively, but also how to manage fear, to apply discipline, and to react with self-control. Il soo sik dae ryun is pre-arranged sparring in a one-step action; the detailed mode of attack, defense, & counterattack is pre-arranged.
The pre-arranged dae ryun training assists in developing the sense of distance, timing, and accurate counterattack with the correct technique and at the appropriate target.
The are a total of 60 techniques to be used in il soo sik dae ryun. Il soo sik soo ki means one-step HAND techniques; Il soo sik jok ki refers to KICKING techniques. There are 30 techniques for both soo ki and jok ki, and every technique has been classified by their character, difficulty, and complexity to aid in a step-by-step process.
(refer to the "self-defense belt testing requirements" on the main self-defense page)Repetition is the true path in achieving the optimum skill in soo ki and jok ki. Each technique should be repeated a minimum of three times per class. The first time is done slowly to allow for the correct application of the technique; the second time is to determine the correct acceleration of the technique; the third time the technique is executed, the student puts an all out effort into the technique.
To simplify our Il Soo Sik techniques, this sheet was created to provide nicknames for the various one-step HANDS & KICKING techniques, making it easier to memorize.
Note: Hands & Kicks are not required until you test for black belt. This sheet only provides a general overview of the techniques, so it is recommended to seek your instructor for additional help & understanding of the movements.
