Download a DEM in an area of interest
Delineate a watershed
Use flow accumulation to approximate a stream network
Calculate stream order
Create a simple longitudinal profile
I conducted hydrologic analyses using DEMs. First, I downloaded two 10m DEMs from the AGRC to figure out watershed in Provo UT. Second, I utilized several tools for watershed delineation. Third, I selected flow accumulation thresholds value and classified it. Then, I calculated stream orders in the watershed and create profile plots and contour using the 3D Analysist tool. I conducted this study by ArcMap 10.7.1, and the coordinate system, NAD 1983 UTM Zone 12N, is used.
The five parts were conducted in the lab. In the first part, I used the Mosaic to new raster for combining two DEM tiles after downloading DEMs. During the projecting elevation data, I used the Bilinear resampling technique. In the second part, several sequence tools conducted for watershed delineation. To be specific, the Fill tool for repairing holes in the DEM, the Flow Direction tool for calculating the direction of flow, and the Flow Accumulation tool for calculation of how many cells would drain. Before making a watershed area, you have to choose a pour point using the create a point feature, and this point is an outlet of the watershed. In the third part, I found a break value to create two classes in the flow accumulation layer. I selected 2,000 as a flow accumulation threshold value and reclassified it that less than 2,000 is NoData, and over 2,000 is 1. In the fourth part, I calculated the stream order tool after using the clip tool and found there are 5 orders in the watershed. Finally, I created the profile graph on the map by the interpolated line in the 3D Analysist tool and created a contour.
In this lab, hydrologic analyses were conducted. The analyzed watershed has five stream order, and the total stream length is 396km. The percentage of each stream order like this. 1st stream order 53.2%(216km), 2nd stream order 24.2%(96km), 3rd stream order 8.9% (35km), 4th stream order 10.7% (42km), and 5th stream order 3% (12km). The reclassified flow accumulation threshold is 2,000 cells. During this lab, I had several troubles shooting because I unintentionally choose a big watershed, and thus it was not enough using one 10m DEM tile. Also, this map utilized several tools, and many files also created. Therefore, we have to be careful about naming the new file.
