The gym has a totally different culture and is a place where you are surrounded by people who take the gym way too seriously and often have little to show for it (these people are known as gym rats). I find that those who are at the gym often think more about the future which is reflected in the delayed benefits of being active. When I became a gym rat, it was out of a place of self-hate, disappointment, and a need to be better. I played soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey until I suffered a knee injury that sent me looking for another competitive outlet. It took meeting my now boyfriend to get over the fear of judgment in the gym, but now that I have, I practically live there.

He is a co-founder of Renaissance periodization and has grown an internet platform that haunts my TikTok feed. Dr. Mike has been instrumental in the modern gym rat community and has advocated for the long-term benefits, living a healthier lifestyle, and progressive overload.Â
