Most people who are in the Catholic Church are born into the religion, meaning they can’t imagine a life without god. In my experience, I felt my faith leave at a very young age but was forced to remain active in the church. I went through my First Communion and Confirmation before I was allowed to leave, as did many of the people I grew up with. I eventually stopped attending church due to personal conflicts such as sexuality and traumatic events within the church but have remained affiliated for familial interest.
Many of the things that are commonly advocated in the Church such as a negative stance on gay marriage, living free of sin, and even the idea of God has pushed me away from the Church. When I partially separated from the church, I did so because I thought that I could not remain true to my own values and beliefs while fully affiliated. I think that this image clearly highlights that for some individuals, it is more beneficial to separate from the church than falsely advocate against gay marriage, living a life free of sin, and normalizing religious trauma.
