Hues of Hispania in the Philippines

During the Spanish Colonial Period (1521–1898), the Philippines embraced formal art styles such as Byzantine, Gothic, Baroque, and Rococo. Most creations were religious, serving to promote Christianity. Filipino artists integrated these styles, with a particular emphasis on Byzantine art, known for its Christian themes. Notable contributions included intricate wood carvings by Juan Flores and award-winning paintings by Juan Luna. This era also marked the rise of a Filipino elite class and the introduction of Neo-Classicism and Romanticism into the local artistic landscape.
