Conflict of Interest
We may have already received your potential conflict of interest declaration from an earlier confirmation email. If you have not received an email with a link to your Confirmation Form before March 25, please contact the Judges' Committee at pcdctcsf@gmail.com or 845-621-1260 x-402 b to request the link to your Confirmation Form.
As a reminder, our collective goal is to provide students with an accurate, objective, and unbiased assessment of their exhibits based on clearly defined criteria. Because one concern that comes up from time to time is a potential conflict of interest in judging, we'd like to present several scenarios to keep in mind before you select the exhibits to judge. Please do not pick an exhibit if:
You are an alumnus, current employee, or former employee from a school participating in the fair.
You are related, a family friend, neighbor, current mentor, or previous mentor to a student or employee from a school participating in the fair.
You are or were conducting business with either a student or employee, their immediate family, or directly with a school participating in the fair.
The topic of the exhibit may have some conflict with your employer, school, or profession. For example, a project using Coca-Cola should not be judged by a PepsiCo employee.
As a judge, you agree to let the Judges Committee of the Tri-County Science & Technology Fair know when you discover that a conflict of interest exists in judging a student, or category with several students, in which you have mentored a participant, personally know a participant or have previously judged a participant this year. You understand that if this occurs, you will inform the Judges Committee immediately and recuse yourself from judging the affected project(s) because you are fully aware that complying with this rule maintains the integrity of the Fair.
Judges with conflicts of interest or personal connections with specific schools or students are still welcome to volunteer but will be assigned to judge exhibits that present no conflict. For example, we do allow teachers from schools that are competing in the fair to serve as a judge, but they cannot judge at the same level in which their students are competing.
If you are unsure about any potential conflict you may discover on the day of the Fair, please seek out a judging coordinator for more information.
