When looking at the data and how they looked on the graphs, we noticed some intriguing trends. From both of those sets of graphs, after playing around with the data we were able to find some interesting information regarding the history of movies.
The first thing we noticed is that when we filtered the data to show only action films, we noticed a pretty big spike in those films occurring after the year 2000 compared to other decades. When looking at the number of films per year, you can clearly notice a jump in movies which were labeled as action. The same trend can be noticed when looking at the films per decade plot. Even though the number of action movies decreased in the 2010 decade, it was still a lot higher than the previous decades before the turn of the new millennia. The only real contender pre-2000 would be the 1970's and by looking at the data, it seems to be a very quick peak and valley when it comes to that era since the decades before and after the 70's showed a significantly lower number of movies.
We believe this was the effect of technology advancing and how the improvements were eventually used in the movie industry. Now directors can make more complex and fun action scenes than ever before. Sometime they don't even need stunt doubles or need to film at certain locations, they can use a greenscreen as well as CGI to re-create certain environments. Movie editing has gotten a lot better to make these action scenes more real and we will also add that the rise in superhero movies in the past couple of years have also played a role in this.
Another thing we noticed is that when we were looking at how the films were distributed by month, we noticed that a lot of movies occurred in May, September and October. Like with the plots at the above, there was a drop off between the two months of September and October but they were still above the rest of the months with the exception of May. This trend perplexed our group a bit since with the exception of October, there weren't any really major holiday themed movies which typically release during then. We can attribute October's high number to Halloween being at the end of the month but the rest of the two were sort of confusing.
Thinking as to why this would be the case, we concluded that it must have been the change of season along with May being the start of summer and many film companies trying to put out as much content as possible before the season starts. Summer usually has a lot of good movies coming out during it so it would make sense for May to be one of the top months.
The final trend we noticed was that during the 1940's, the number of films dropped a bit. This makes a lot of logical sense as World War 2 was happening during this time. Certainly making movies wasn't at the fore front of everyone's mind as a lot of resources, including man power, was being used in war efforts. As you can see below, there is a dip in movie after the 1930's before it starts to pick back up in the 50's
We also found that rated R movies were the most popular rating as shown by the graph below. But it didn't mean that horror movies (which are generally if not always rated R) were the most popular genre. That title was given to comedy movies with our reasoning being that making people laugh is a fun time for the whole family and something everyone can enjoy. Our reasoning for Rated R movies being the most popular of the distribution might be that most movies can be rated that way based on numerous factors and not just violence. It can be because of the comedy or other things portrayed in the movie that makes it not suitable for people under the age of 17.
In conclusion, we found the data to be quite fun to look at. Like any media data, we can see as technology and society advance, so did the number of things such as TV and movies in terms of creation. There is so much to consume today and there is no shortage of movies to watch. With that much data available, it's nice to take a look into the past and see how far movies have changed in terms of their output and the types of films to be made. By peering into a certain year or decade, we can take a look at what types of films were the most popular and get a small idea of what life was like back then along with that movies society seemed the most interested in during that time.
