The new normal has been challenging for both the teacher and the student. The shift to online learning, while convenient, is not really for everyone. But as the rest of the world tries to stay safe at home, it seems to be the best option. Educator Victor Restis shares that in this current setup, students are more prone to distractions. He shares these strategies for teachers who want to conduct successful lectures online.
Keep it short and simple
Factoring in technical difficulties and the usual chores like taking attendance, one might not have enough time for an hour that is just for lecturing. This is why it's important to prepare lessons that can run for less than 20 minutes. During this time, teachers must discuss their lessons in a way that is engaging and memorable. Victor Restis says that they can do this with creative presentations and reinforce their ideas with supplementary materials that don't always have to involve readings.
Give them an idea of the topic in advance
Aside from reminding students that they can always check the syllabus, teachers can preview their lessons in the discussion groups or in the last minutes of the online class. One of the main reasons why students stop paying attention is because they can no longer relate to the discussion. Victor Restis suggests giving students a heads up at least a day before will allow them to read up a bit and do an online search. These days, it's important for students to be proactive regarding their learning. Allowing them to find supplementary sources will help them in their participation.
