In the following entry you'll find two lesson plans that include websites and task sheets created both online and offline. These lesson plans have been created in accordance with the "Warmer, Web, What's next" framework proposed by Dudeney and Hockly in their book "How to teach with Technology" (2007, p. 37).
Unit of work: Food
Topic: Menus
Theme: Creating a menu
Objectives:
Classifying food according to their flavours
Creating a school lunch menu
Functions:
Expressing preference (using prefer / prefers)
Expressing desire (using would like)
LESSON 1
General information:
Age: 8 year-olds
Language level: beginners
Physical location: Classroom + ICT lab
Time allotted: 1:20hs
Recycled language: food, food flavours (sweet, savoury, plain, crunchy, spicy, soft), would like, prefer.
Warmer (10’):
The students will play “What’s missing?”. In this game, the teacher places flashcards on the whiteboard, the students have a few seconds to take a look and then they have to close their eyes. The teacher takes one of the cards and when the students open their eyes they have to guess which one is missing. In this case, this game will be used to tap into their prior knowledge and revise food (tuna, cheese, olives, hamburger, pizza, corn, among others). The teacher can ask questions such as “Do you like…?” to engage students even more in the game.
Web (40’):
The students will watch the following video: Your Tongue - The Taste-Maker! on YouTube to get to know more about food flavours. Then, they will create a mindmap with the food flavours that appear on the video and some examples using Google Drawings.
The students will work on the following online worksheet to classify the food according to their flavours.
What’s Next (30’):
The students will play “Find someone who…” around the school. They will go around, visiting different classrooms in order to complete the following printed task sheet created offline by the teacher to revise expressing preference:
Once they have finished the activity, they will go back to the classroom and share their findings.
LESSON 2
General information:
Age: 8 year-olds
Language level: beginners
Physical location: Classroom + ICT lab
Time allotted: 1:20hs
Recycled language: food, food flavours (sweet, savoury, plain, crunchy, spicy, soft), would like, prefer.
Warmer (10’):
The students will play the following game on Wordwall to revise the topics dealt with in the previous lesson. This matching activity will help them remember the vocabulary and structures they have learnt. The teacher may also ask the students to say the sentences aloud once they find the matching pairs.
Web (40'):
The students will work on the following task sheet created on Top Worksheets to revise food flavours and expressing preference:
Then, the students will explore the following dishes in the BBC Food website to get ideas for their School Lunch Menu. As they find dishes they like, they will draft their menu a word document.
What's Next (30'):
The students will be divided in groups of 3 in order to create their own School Lunch Menu on the following task sheet created with Canva! Each of the groups will create one menu for a week. They will draw and describe it, clarifying each of the meals flavour. They will probably need extra time, which can be given to them on the following lesson to edit, finish and share their menus.
