Reflection on Experiences with Domain I

Description of Learning:

During my time at Slippery Rock University, my classes emphasized the importance of creating excellent teachers. I have had classes that taught me specific ways to teach and different things to do throughout the class time to promote learning. Each lesson plan contains what, how, and why statements for students to begin to understand what they are supposed to do each class. The SMART Objectives are also on each lesson plan, which makes it clear what the goal of the assessments is. Technology has a huge emphasis on our discipline and student engagement. I have learned ways to encourage learning through tools that students are familiar and comfortable with.

Reflection:

This domain has great importance and connects to the other three domains. Already understanding the developmental stages of students and in what order it is best to teach things will make it easier once in a school. Also learning about the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child emphasizes the importance of getting to know students first hand and individualizing the learning process. Making sure that the goals for my classes are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and, timely) will encourage students. It will be my main goal as a teacher to assure students that they with deliberate practice they are capable of anything.

Plan of Action:

As a teacher, I will always strive to keep up to date and learn new ways to promote student learning. I consider myself a lifetime learner and in turn, I want to help my students to find something they are passionate about and learn as much as they can. I will relate all of my lessons to their life and emphasize WHY these things are important. I will make it clear at the beginning of each class what students are to do, what is expected of them, and how things are to do done that specific day and throughout the year. The only way to be an effective learner is to have an effective teacher.
