Vermont Alpha Delta Kappa History
History of Vermont State Banner-Alpha Delta Kappa
When we were established as a state organization in 1970, it was decided that we should have a state banner. All members were encouraged to submit suggestions for the banner design. Since no designs were forthcoming, Priscilla March and Kay White got together and decided that Priscilla would design the banner and Kay would make it. Needlepoint was used because no other state banners were made that way. They wanted the banner to be representative of the state of Vermont and Alpha Delta Kappa. The olive green, gold and purple were used as they are the sorority colors. The Sugar Maple was used as it is the State Tree. It was done with colored leaves to represent the beauty of fall in Vermont. The 50 on the bridge indicated that Vermont was the fiftieth state to have Alpha Delta Chapters. The purple dots in the outline of the state represent where chapters are located. The Alpha Delta Kappa section represents the sorority.
The new banner was started in 2017 when then state president Lorrie Richland asked her step daughter Kristin to come up with some new designs. The idea was to create a single representation and to align Vermont's banner design with those of the other Northeast Regional states. The two columns come from the Alpha Delta Kappa badge design. The shape of Vermont echoes that from the old banner. Vermont is wrapped with a sash that names the three chapters. Alpha Delta Kappa violets sit above the arch. All three of our organization's colors are represented. Lorrie Richland appliqued and stitched the banner. It was presented at the 2018 State Convention in Montpelier and at the 2019 ADK Conference in Rhode Island.
