Collaborative professional learning exchange____________________

VCE Curriculum planning and assessment support session from 2:30pm to 5pm on Saturday, February 12 2022

It will be a great opportunity to refresh, strengths and transfer understandings of the VCAA Spanish study design.

1. The theme and subtopics annual year overview for Units 1-2 (first year) and Units 3-4 (second year).

2. Thinking of the product: outcome-based learning sequence as per Knowledge and skills of each AoS.

* This will give you an insight on how to do backward design from the outcome towards what content to cover weekly to build up towards getting students demonstrating outcomes.

3. Distribution of outcomes around the semester for units 1 and 3 (AKA outcome schedule)

4 The assessment task schedule including sample assessment tasks

5 Some tips on how to work around mixed-level classes: independent work, rotations and small group instruction may be useful.


Please, remember that you are teaching students to demonstrate knowledge and skills as per the Study design.

Nice-to-knows are a temptation sometimes but in VCE, less is more applies as long as it is referenced from the VCAA Spanish Study Design.

All contents and resources should connect directly in topic, density and relevance with the themes and subtopics you are covering for each Area of Study during the semester/year to prepare students for their external exams.

As a Start up__________________________________________________________________________________

- It is wise to complete a whole unit approach, gain clarity of what each Area of Study involves, what the outcome expects students to demonstrate and establish your SAC and the task description.

- When the outcomes, tasks and SAC are clear, use the AoS Outcomes based outline to start backward design based on the knowledge and skills for each of the AoS Knowledge and skills.

As a starting point, some materials to establish learning progressions for Unit 1 and 3 that you may wish to go through for point 2 of the collaborative professional learning are:

Unit 4 Suggested Learning sequence AoS 1 and Outcome 1 (VSL based outline)

You may need to modify the number of classes and volume of content allocated to each of your lessons as this is based on a 3 hour block at the VSL. You can break the planning in three sessions of 45 to 1h each

Unit 4 Aos 2 Outcome 2 Booklet building on SAC 2. Keep in mind this is a baseline resource. As a start point for regular groups is a good model to follow. More advanced students may require extra and more focused differentiated resources or just different versions of the same. For instance, if you use the Tomatina as a starting festival and students need more practice, then add following the same text format.
