Stories, regardless of forms, have always been constructed, edited, made up to entertain, educate and express particular messages, information, and ideologies. But did the audience know about the amount of editing and post-production put in behind the scenes to make imagery connect from one to another as natural as if it has not been intervened by creatives? Driven by this question, I decided to produce The Magician (2024). By exposing the nature of ‘film production’ from setting up to acting, then to editing; I hope to bring an alternative point of view for audience to explore on film and cinema through my manipulation on camera, visual and editing. It is a statement from me that film can be something other than the mainstream cinema’s immersive presentation, passive audience participation and reliance on dialogues to construct and deliver storytelling in film.
First time Experimental Approach - Prioritising Pictorial elements
Before The Magician (2024), or I should say before attending my experimental course module this year, I've always prioritised 'words' and narrative because I think a good story and good lines is all it takes to have people be fully engaged and be connected to the big screen. But the Experimental module changed me, it taught me to not be so conscribed, and that I have learnt to maximise other cinematic elements, not just dialogues but also playing with colours, musics, cuts... I am being bold, I am being expressive and trying to tell what a filmmaker or a filmmaking process jorney I took as I was creating something. And I'm glad that people (my coursemates) who have watched it before, can see the fun of it, and connect with to it - the pain, the brainstorming, the humorous side of it when I continuously walk from right handside of the frame to the left handdside while my two friends (who are not studying film) looked at me in confused, thinking I'm silly and all that, and then it all make sense after the 'illusion' (post-production) just really tells me how much potential filmmaking or storytelling holds - magical and imaginative and I will forever be amazed by it.
