Crowd regulation through outreach and voluntary participation, during weekends of Shravana at Gopalaswamy Betta in Bandipur national park.

Post date: Aug 14, 2013 9:06:29 AM

Date of Participation:

10th and 11th August, 2013

17th and 18th August, 2013

24th and 25th August, 2013

31st August and 1st September, 2013

Temples and other places of worship in protected areas are prone to crowd assemblage in high volume. This assemblage gets amplified further during festivities. Such congregations and associated practices result in several detrimental effects on wildlife such as Habitat Modification, Edge effect, Soil and Water pollution. Needless to say the disturbance will degrade the habitat considerably.

Objective:

  • Reduce human footprints in this wild landscape.
  • Educate people against recreational activities.
  • Regulate people so that religious practice is not hindered and carried within the temple precincts.

Expected Outcome:

Reduced pressure on the wildlife.

Activities:

  • We would be checking every vehicle entering the check post and filter all items except Pooja materials.
  • Manning the road leading to temple to stop people from littering and trespassing into the forests
  • Manning the temple premises and surroundings to stop people from using firewood and trespassing into forests.
  • On the eve we will travel to a few villages and carry out awareness programs through road shows, skits, pamphlets and PA systems.

Vanya invites volunteers to participate in this exercise and help us conserve endangered wildlife here.

General Guidelines:

• Volunteers need to be street smart as this involves talking with people on regular basis.

• Volunteers need to be flexible with accommodation and food as simple accommodation and food will be provided in a nearby village.

• Smoking, consuming alcohol is strictly prohibited in the forest limits.

• Vanya reserves the right to send back any volunteer found to be doing this.

•15 Volunteers are needed on each weekend so those registering first will be selected.

• Volunteers need to wear Khaki or earthly colored attire.
