Upon the completion of the 6 common curriculum modules, I have gained valuable knowledge about the world and how certain actions of us, individuals can impact the people, environment and things around us.
The 6 core modules has definitely altered my mindset and sparked emotions towards certain things, take for example, how the existence of our inherent human nature of greed and selfishness has breed capitalism worldwide. The constant act and spread of the rich exploiting the poor for their own personal gains over many generations has led to many significant events that portrays the negative consequences (eg. Poverty) of capitalism. Such unfairness has definitely sparked unhappiness and anger within me, for these selfish acts has harmed many innocent individuals.
For a more relevant and everyday example, Cigarettes. People in the past, who demanded for cigarettes to be made for purposes of leveraging on the ‘addiction’ factor to generate huge profits, has created a phenomenal impact on the lives of many individuals, including the innocents, over multiple generations. The invention of cigarettes has played a part in the creation of cancer, a presently incurable illness that has taken away billions or even trillions of lives over the globe. Now, can you imagine how the act of some selfish individuals has spread from generation to generation, causing harm to many lives, even, at present time, your loved ones ? How devastating one selfish act could cause!
This factor accompanied with other learning points gained throughout the 6 modules, has definitely motivated me to make a (better) difference to the lives of others, be it my loved ones or anyone I’m capable of helping. Hence, this ties in closely with UniSIM’s values of having the ‘HEART’, that allows us, students, to pursue the act of helping the unfortunate or those in need. With my current commitment to 2 Service Learning groups namely ‘Beyond Self’ and ‘SUSS TORCH (formally known as UniSIM Lions)’ that mainly targets at needy kids and elderly, I aim to create a positive impact to the lives of these individuals with which they would gain valuable life lessons or even promote a positive change to their mindsets towards the way they lead or view their lives. This can be achieved through both physical and emotional support accompanied with a tinge of tolerance to nurture these individuals. This would take great amount of commitment in aspects of our time, effort and energy in planning and executing beneficial activities for these individuals. However, all these would be worthwhile as a little help goes a long way! (:
