A Forward
This site is created to be the final product of my time in my college class com 101. The assignments were challenging and thought-provoking however a theme appeared. Every piece has something to do with looking at things closer so you can understand them. Whether it be a person, place or idea the truth lurks just beneath the surface wanting to be discovered. There are different types of media throughout this project at first it’s a bit strange, this is supposed to be a writing class, not a multimedia class. For a while I did a lot of grumbling about how “this is a composition class, not a photography class,” however, keeping in mind the old phrase “A picture is worth a 1,000 words” it makes sense.
One of the strengths in this piece is the passion I have put into this portfolio. The class really helped me tap into emotions because this class is graded differently than most. This system allows the writer to tap into their creativity rather than just filling in a format that most students have done all their academic lives. The passion I have in my pieces usually comes from personal experiences and/or talking about things I’m interested in. In the fourth paper, you will read a story about a character who was once part of a hate group but got themselves out of it. I highly enjoyed writing that piece simply because I got to give a character in a show I once helped write a redemption arc. The first piece also has a lot of passion in it because I got to describe a lot of things that I like that have shaped my identity.
Another strength of this piece is the ideas portrayed in the writing, The prompts where decently open so as long as you answered them you were golden. This class was about the communication of ideas not about just the grades. This was made possible by the several reminders to not use formats. We all have written formatted essays in our time it’s just how schools work, but in this class, we needed to actually use our own ideas. The prompts obviously must be answered but how you get to that answer is flexible.
A third strength of this is honestly the fact that when I was revising I was able to tell where the flaws (idea wise not mechanical wise) were. For example, the third piece you will read originally was written as what I can only describe as, a product of a week-long mental break down. So when I went back I had a lot to fix and I think it is much better now then it was. This class itself had a lot of emphasis on revision rather than editing. This emphasis was super helpful with my writing career because I used to just edit for grammar and other mechanical errors when in reality I should have been also revising my writing.
I hope you enjoy my writing.
