Program Staff

Dr. Yen-Chu Weng (翁彥筑)

Program Director, UW

As a geographer, I have always been interested in exploring the connections between human societies and the environment. I grew up in Taiwan and came to the US for graduate school. Currently I teach Environmental Studies at the University of Washington. I am excited about this opportunity to bring students from the two campuses together to explore environmental topics in Taiwan.

Dr. Po-Yi Hung (洪伯邑)

Associate Professor, NTU

With academic background in human geography and cultural anthropology, my research focuses on nature-society relations through the lens of agricultural practices and food trade in Taiwan, China, and Southeast Asia. My research interests include Political Ecology, Food and Agriculture, Development Studies, Landscape, Space and Place.

Shiu (練聿修)

TA

After getting my Bachelor and Master's degree in the Department of Geography of NTU, I now usually claim myself as a geographer-to-be. I have spent 3 years investigating the tea farming and producing in Taiwan and Vietnam, which I believe could have some conversation with participants in this program. Besides, I’m also interested in political geography and border studies, and their derived topics of Taiwanese identity and nationalism. Welcome to Taiwan!

Cindy (張宇忻)

TA

I found my interest in food and agriculture. My friends and I built a kitchen and held cooking events on campus. My Master's thesis is about Taiwanese coffee production in indigenous communities in Pingtung, the southern part of Taiwan. By doing field work, I tried to understand the relationships between coffee industry and disaster reconstruction, sense of belonging and mobility, and rural and urban.
