Shuo (徐碩)

I am Hsu Shuo from Nantou, Taiwan. I am a graduate student in Department of Geography, NTU. Under supervision of Prof. Po-Yi Hung, my research focuses on the relationship between people, flood-control infrastructure, and the environment of Shezi Island(社子島), where is a restricted development area between Tamsui River and Keelung River in Taipei.

Hobby: bird-watching

What excites you about this program: Earn some credits, learn about urban ecology and meet some friends having shared hobbies or research interests.

Sylvana (謝斯喆)

I am a second-year graduate student in IPCS (Climate Change and Sustainable Development). I am from China and I used to major in Sociology before I came to Taiwan. Since I am concerned about environmental issues, I join this interdisciplinary program (IPCS) and now my research is about urban farming.

Hobby: writing

What excites you about this program: This program refers to a lot of issues I care about, like urban farming and green energy. I am also eager to learn more about the stories around Taipei by visiting different places. Making friends sharing similar passion is also an important motivation for me.

Sarah (陳怡君)

I am from Kaohsiung. I like to watch tennis matches. I teach Geography in junior high school.

Hobby: tennis

What excites you about this program: I am interested in environmental ecology. I like field work and I want to know Taipei better.

Jimmy (劉俊旻)

I am Jimmy from Hualien. Now I am studying Geography at National Taiwan Normal University. This semester, I joined a class is about urban metabolism. I think it is a very interesting topic - it helps people to know how natural resources work in cities.

Hobby: badminton

What excites you about this program: Due to urbanization, people concentrate in cities. This creates some issues, and people start to focus on it. So do I.

Jean (黃湘君)

I am 22 years old and I major in Chinese Literature at National Taiwan University. I like to explore the beauty of Taiwan in nature.

Hobby: reading, Chinese classical literature, sinology, mountain-climbing

What excites you about this program: Finding the possibilities of nature and human communication, understanding the space we live.

Trace or Tang (黃明堂)

I am Trace, from Pingtung. I am a second-year graduate student. My research focuses on the coffee industry in Yunnan, China. My fieldwork experience has deepened my care about agriculture issues from the perspective of human geography.

Hobby: volleyball

What excites you about this program: I'm glad to join this program to share different experiences with each other. I would like to learn how different culture of education contributes to different ways of thinking.

Yiting (郭宜婷)

My name is Yiting. I am an easy-going Libra graduating from the Department of Geography. Now I am a student of the Graduate Institute of Building and Planning at NTU. I am interested in urban development and urban farming. My research topic is about urban beekeeping in Taiwan, why so many beekeepers pop up in recent years and what kinds of representations or relationships exist between people and urban nature.

Hobby: wandering on the street

What excites you about this program: I am interested in urban agriculture and field trips.

Li-Ting (連笠庭)

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Earth Sciences and experience of both field and laboratory work, especially in marine chemistry. After graduating from college, I have taught science in middle school for many years. I’m currently working on my Master's thesis, which focuses primarily on social and climate impact on the fishing industry. I’m particularly concerned about how to supply good nutrition to everyone and maintain the sustainability of fisheries.

Hobby: hiking, gardening, playing piano and clarinet

What excites you about this program: I think it's a good way to make people realize the importance of the natural environment by exploring food issues.

Kai-Yuan (虞開元)

I'm a student majoring in Physics and Sociology, interested in area/community studies, land grabbing and eviction issues, and environmental issues. I have participated in a social movement about the eviction of Daguan community, in Fuzhou, Banqiao. This experience made me curious about where local residents' agency is, how to empower them and let them empower themselves, and whether there is hope in active democracy to deal with the problems produced by representative democracy and Neo-liberalism. My current plan is to attend graduate school to keep on finding answers to those questions.

Hobby: music - funk, soul, neo-soul, jazz, hiphop, city pop, and punk

What excites you about this program: I'm curious about how to do eco-friendly agriculture in or around cities, especially how to sustain in the market full of competitions between capitals. Also, I want to know what pros and cons it will bring to urban farmers: will it be a better location for the farmers to make influences on the consumers, to promote the value of eco-friendly agriculture? I think this program will provide some answers.

Paula (蔡佩文)

I am Tsai Pei-wen, first-year student in the Master's program in the Department of Geography, National Taiwan University. For me, Geography is a way to read the world. Environmental issues and geographical education are particularly interesting to me. My research topic focuses on the local practice of green energy. I really look forward to this course and communicating with you. Welcome!

Hobby: music, table tennis, traveling

What excites you about this program: I look forward to discovering more possibilities for environmental education through the outdoor fieldworks of this course. Among them, exhibition of Po-Lin Chi is particularly attractive to me.

Huei Ya (廖慧雅)

I study Geography in NTU. I had a workshop about field research. I’m interested in observing what happen to people and thinking about how culture is expressed through landscapes. I will do field research in Taitung for my Master's thesis. I also had three very interesting classes: food geography, food agriculture and society, political ecology. These classes taught me how to find problems and there could be many factors that contribute to a case or situation. When I saw the introduction about this class, I felt excited about recognizing homeland and meeting new friends. I also worked in Shuang-Xi High School, teaching Geography and serving as Chief of Hygiene.

Hobby: I love sports, Recently, I'm learning about Martha Graham and contemporary dance.

What excites you about this program: I felt exciting about recognizing homeland and meeting new friends.

Marshia (劉映辰)

My major is plant pathology and microbiology. I’m the first-year student in Bachelor's degree. In the past, I was more concerned about environmental issues derived from waste disposal. I regard this course as an opportunity to explore the interaction between the environment and human activities. I am able to deeper understanding of where I live from a different perspective. I’m looking forward to inspiring different thinking in the program.

Hobby: Modern dance and herbs are my favorite. I also like to play volleyball and read novels and comics, particularly the types of inspirational, romantic and fantasy.

What excites you about this program: I feel excited about realizing how the the interaction between the environment and human activities by sharing experiences to each other.

I am studying department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology in National Taiwan University. I am a foodie and I like to try different delicious food. I new hobby is sewing, learning how to make pants for myself.

What excites you about this program: I want to learn more about urban agriculture. And I am interested in field trips.
