The first research method my group and I executed were the surveys, which can be read about in more detail on the Survey page.
After having analyzed the data from our surveys, we learned about some improvements that can be made to restaurant management systems. Based on the users responses, my group and I decided to add three additional features to the system.
A feature that allows for drink order customization. We learned from our survey and interview that RMS's don't currently allow for much collaboration between servers and the bar (bartenders). Based on this, we decided on including a additional feature that allows for customers to make customized drink orders, which the server can send to a bartender with the RMS.
A feature that allows for changes to be made to the inventory, and for items that are on short-supply to be ordered. Another issue that was brought up by many people was the RMS's lack of communication with management. Particularly in-relation to inventory. Participants mentioned their frustration with the fact that they can't inform management of changes in inventory and have been left without key ingredients for meals. Our goal was the add a feature to let servers and staff make specific inventory requests and updates.
A feature that allows for direct online messaging with the manager and staff. We learned that users had gripes about the RMS's use of communication with management. So we decided to include a feature allowing any employee to use the RMS to communicate directly with management or any other part of the restaurant.
After analyzing the data from surveys and deciding what features to add. We needed to make a prototype of the additional features.
The prototype was made using Google Slides, a decision we later regretted due to it's inability to be as interactive as we wanted it to. The main issue being users couldn't type onto the slides.
After completing the prototype, we used it for our usability testing. In which we each conducted a 15-20 minute usability test with a participant in our targeted user demographic. More detailed information on the usability study can be viewed here.
The prototype can be seen and tested bellow.
