Application and Admission Process

Field School Prerequisites

At least one introductory level course in archaeology. An Introduction to Archaeology (ANTH 1300 at U.W.) that covers theory and method is preferred. Additional courses in anthropology, history, geology and other relevant disciplines are a plus, but are not required.

What you need to do to enroll in the field school:

    1. Complete the Field School Application by February 1, 2022. Absolute deadline is March 15, 2022. See below.

    2. Once you have received an email (from Dr. Ahern or Dr. Weathermon) admitting you to the field school, you will need to:

      • If you are not a U.W. student, apply for "non-degree undergraduate" admission to the University of Wyoming and pay the admission fee.

      • Submit an Education Abroad Application for the Croatia Field School. Go HERE and then select "Faculty-Directed: Archaeological Field School in Croatia." After entering the information page, click on "Apply Now" and complete the application. If you have any problems with the UW Education Abroad application portal, please contact Sara Robinson (SaraR@uwyo.edu).

      • Formally register for the the course (ANTH 4140 - Section # to be announced ASAP). Registration is handled through WyoWeb (see the Registrar's website for more information on registration). You will need to email Faith Camargo (fcamargo@uwyo.edu) in the Anthropology Department in order to register for the course.

      • Upon official UW Education Abroad acceptance, you will be charged a non-refundable deposit of $1,000 to your UW student account. The remaining fees, including the rest of the field school fee, the $325 UW Education Abroad Fee, and other UW fees, as well as UW tuition will be charged to you UW student account by or after April 1, 2022. These will need to be paid for by no later than June 1, 2022.

Deadlines:

February 1, 2022: Deadline for completing the informal application.

February 15, 2022: Deadline for the (formal) UW Education Abroad field school application to be submitted (see above).

March 1, 2022: Apply for a passport if you do not already have one.

March/April, 2022: Purchase your roundtrip air tickets (you can wait until later, but you will likely pay more and have more awkward, multi-stop trips).

May 27, 2022 (tentative): optional one day, intensive pre-field training session (tentatively planned for on location at Camp Guernsey, Wyoming). If you are not local, we still would encourage you to attend this one day session (and we can help arrange for lodging). However, if you are not able to come, we will make alternative arrangements.

June 1, 2022: Must have paid UW summer bill in full, including all field school fees, student international travel insurance, and the UW Education Abroad fee.

June 23, 2022 (tentative): Must arrive in Zagreb, Croatia by the evening of this day.

Application

The online application is now available. Please note that this is only the application for the field school. It is not an application for admission to the University of Wyoming, and you must be admitted by U.W. before you can a) register for the field school and b) submit the Education Abroad application. You do not need to be admitted to U.W. before you fill out the field school application. Field school admission will be based upon your application, your provided references, available funding, available 'seats' in the class, and the discretion of the field school instructors.
