"Paving Riverside Avenue at Curve"
Date: 1930 - 1937
Photographer: L.L. McAllister
Source: Special Collections, Bailey/Howe Library, University of Vermont
Description:
The historic photograph shows a construction crew and a steamroller paving Riverside Ave. Part of the Fairview Garage and its Texaco gas pumps are visible on the left side of the image. There are several cars parked in the garage's parking lot. There are billboard advertisements for "Chesterfield" (cigarettes?), "Lyric Radio", and the "Sherwood Hotel." There are houses on top of a partially cleared hill in the background of the image. The photograph taken by McAllister was probably taken within 10 years of 1930.Submitted By: Kara

Description:
A shaded paved road enters the photo from the lower left and as it exits on the right, the sun starts to shine on it. On the left there is a car dealership with a truck out front. Directly opposite the photographer is the car lot with the used cars. In the background is a hill covered with trees. On the top left of the photo, a lone tree is still bare. Most of the trees are blooming, so springtime has arrived. In the old photo, you can see the beginnings of the car dealership, and the hill is the background is bare except for the ridgeline. Paved bike path adjacent to road. Fancy lamp post.Submitted By: Aaron Shore

Description:
The site of the photograph is along the Riverside Avenue Curve nearby the Winooski River Salmon Hole parking lot and trail head. In the foreground of the photograph there is a sidewalk/bike path between the road and the Winooski River. There is grass on either side of the path, and the road verge strip appears to have been widened since photographed in 2008 (inferred because the bike path on the road appears thinner than in the 2008 photo). Along the road verge, there are lamp posts and trees that were planted around the time of the 2008 photo, the trees are full with leaves and have filled in and grown quite a bit. Featured on the opposite side of the curved road, a Used Car lot and building with pitched/gable roof. In the background behind the parking lot is a hill covered with trees beginning to change colors from green to yellow, orange, and red.Submitted By: Remy Farrell
